Mauritius — Premium Visa for Digital Nomads Everything you need to work remotely from a safe, multicultural island

Why Mauritius

Beyond postcard beaches and turquoise lagoons, Mauritius offers solid infrastructure, reliable connectivity, safety, and a multicultural vibe. The Premium Visa lets you settle for up to 1 year (renewable) while keeping your income from abroad.

What is the Premium Visa?

A long-stay authorization for tourists, retirees, and professionals who work remotely for employers/clients outside Mauritius. It grants up to 12 months of residence, is renewable, and the government application is free. You can bring your family (spouse and children).

Who manages it & where to apply

The program is handled by the Passport & Immigration Office (PIO) with support from the Economic Development Board (EDB).

Applications are 100% online via the official Premium Visa portal.

Duration, renewals & scope

  • Validity: up to 1 year, renewable in successive periods if you keep meeting the criteria.
  • Scope: live in Mauritius and work remotely for a non-Mauritian entity (it does not authorize local employment).
  • Government fee: no application fee for the Premium Visa.

Core requirements (at a glance)

  • Valid passport for your whole stay
  • Travel/health insurance covering Mauritius
  • Confirmed accommodation (hotel, lease, or contract)
  • Proof of remote work and sufficient funds (contracts/employer letters + bank statements)
  • Keep your primary income outside Mauritius and do not enter the local labor market
Note: There isn’t a single universal “minimum income” published for all cases. Ensure your proof of means is coherent (contracts, statements, active insurance) and covers any dependents.

Step-by-step application

  1. Prep your file: passport, insurance, accommodation, remote-work proof, and evidence of funds.
  2. Apply online through the Premium Visa portal (via PIO/EDB).
  3. Upload documents and submit.
  4. Receive electronic approval and travel with your confirmation to activate your stay at border control.

Taxes (quick orientation)

Foreign income of residents is taxed in Mauritius only if it is remitted (received) in Mauritius. If you plan a long stay, confirm your tax residence position and manage inbound transfers with a qualified advisor.

QUESTRAVEL tips

  • Document consistency: make sure figures in contract ↔ statements ↔ letters line up.
  • Clear insurance wording: policy should explicitly cover Mauritius for the full period.
  • Housing plan: secure a flexible booking/lease before applying.
  • Family: include clean scans of civil documents (marriage/birth) for dependents.
