Being a digital nomad in Greece: what you need to know

At QUESTRAVEL we’ve seen Greece become a gem for remote workers in Europe—not only for its islands, climate, and culture, but also for a Digital Nomad Visa framework with attractive conditions. Below is a clear, step-by-step guide to what it is, the law behind it, the requirements, and how to apply.

What is Greece’s Digital Nomad Visa?

It’s a residence route that lets non-EU citizens live legally in Greece while working remotely for foreign employers or international clients.

Two pathways:

  • Entry visa: valid for 1 year. (uk-gr.gvcworld.eu)
  • Digital Nomad residence permit: valid for 2 years, renewable in additional 2-year blocks. (Digital Nomads)

Who regulates and processes it

Managed by the Ministry of Migration & Asylum of Greece and processed via Greek embassies/consulates abroad.

Introduced under Law 4825/2021 (in Greek). Official Gazette site → https://www.et.gr (searchable BOE/FEK). (Law portal in Greek; operational details are reflected across official and government-backed pages.) (Υπουργείο Μετανάστευσης και Ασύλου)

Duration & renewals

  • Initial visa: up to 12 months. (uk-gr.gvcworld.eu)
  • Residence permit: 2 years, renewable in 2-year periods. After 5 years of continuous residence, you may be eligible to apply for permanent residence (subject to meeting general conditions). (Digital Nomads)

Key requirements

  • Non-EU/EEA national.
  • Remote work for employers/clients outside Greece; submit a signed statement that you won’t work for Greek employers. (Digital Nomads)
  • Minimum income: €3,500/month (net) for the main applicant; +20% if accompanied by spouse/partner; +15% for each dependent child. (Digital Nomads)
  • Private health insurance valid in Greece. (Digital Nomads)
  • Proof of accommodation in Greece (rental, contract, or invitation letter). (imin-portugal.com)
  • Clean criminal record. (imin-portugal.com)

Step-by-step application

  1. Prepare documents
    • Valid passport, criminal record certificate, proof of accommodation in Greece, proof of income/remote work, private health insurance. (Digital Nomads)
  1. Apply at your Greek consulate
  1. Pay consular fees
    • Typically €75–€100 (consulate-specific). (Amounts can vary by mission.)
  1. Processing
    • Guides commonly cite ~10 business days for the visa, but timing varies by consulate/workload; treat 10 days as an estimate, not a guarantee. (Nomads Embassy)
  1. Arrive in Greece
    • If you’ll stay beyond the entry visa, apply for the 2-year Digital Nomad residence permit with the Ministry of Migration & Asylum/local authorities and register locally as instructed. (Digital Nomads)

Advantages

  • Fast, modern process and renewable 2-year residence permit. (Digital Nomads)
  • Possibility to bring immediate family under dependent rules. (Digital Nomads)
  • Mediterranean lifestyle, broad flight connectivity, and a growing remote-work scene.

About the “50% tax reduction” you may have heard of

Greece offers a separate tax incentive (Article 5C of the Income Tax Code, Law 4172/2013) that can exempt 50% of Greek-source employment/self-employment income for new tax residents who relocate under specific conditions.

This is not automatic for Digital Nomad Visa holders; eligibility requires transferring tax residence to Greece and meeting the program’s criteria. Check details with AADE/Ministry of Finance: overview and PDF guidance here. (aade.gr)

QUESTRAVEL’s experience

We’ve guided multiple clients choosing Greece as their EU base. The most common hurdles are document translations/legalizations and clear income proof aligning with the €3,500 net/month threshold (+ dependents). Our team ensures each document meets Greek standards and helps you pick the best location (Athens, Thessaloniki, or islands like Crete) based on your lifestyle.
