Being a nomad in Georgia: what you need to know

Georgia, the small country in the Caucasus, has gone from a well-kept secret to an emerging hub for digital nomads. With vibrant cities like Tbilisi, spectacular mountain landscapes, and a cost of living far below Western Europe, it’s no surprise many remote professionals choose it as a base.

So how does “Remotely from Georgia” work? What are the requirements and the advantages compared with other European destinations? Here’s the step-by-step.

What is the “Remotely from Georgia” program?

Launched in 2020 by the Government of Georgia, it’s an initiative designed to attract people who work remotely. While it isn’t officially called a “digital nomad visa,” it serves that purpose: nationals of 95+ countries can live and work from Georgia for up to one year without a traditional visa.

Why it’s attractive:

  • Easy entry: arrive with a valid passport.
  • It aligns with Georgia’s well-known one-year visa-free stay for many nationalities.
  • Far less bureaucracy than many European countries.

Who regulates and processes it

The program is coordinated by the Government of Georgia with the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development.

Official info and registration are channeled through the Remotely from Georgia page (official platform).

Backed by a special 2020 resolution complementing the Law of Immigration of Georgia, extending stays to foreign professionals who prove financial means and remote activity.

Duration & renewals

  • Initial entry: up to 365 days visa-free for eligible nationalities.
  • Extension: at the end of the year you can exit and re-enter to start a new period (many nomads use this flexibility).
  • Path to residence: after 6+ years of legal stay, you may apply for permanent residence.

Core requirements

  • Nationality: from one of the 95+ authorized countries (includes most of the EU, the U.S., Canada, and much of Latin America).
  • Remote work: an employment contract with a foreign company or self-employment with clients outside Georgia.
  • Minimum income: at least USD 2,000/month or sufficient savings to cover your stay.
  • Health insurance valid in Georgia during your stay.
  • Passport valid beyond your intended period of stay.
