Why Czech Republic?
Prague’s café-to-coworking rhythm, strong internet, and a booming tech scene make Czechia a smart EU base for remote pros. Since 2023, the government has a Digital Nomad Program tailored to highly skilled IT and marketing professionals—letting you live in Czechia while working for foreign companies or as a freelancer.
What is the Digital Nomad Program?
A fast-track scheme that lets eligible IT/marketing employees of foreign companies or freelancers (with a Czech trade license in IT/marketing services) get a long-term visa or long-term residence via priority processing. Family members (spouse/registered partner and children) can apply with you. (mpo.gov.cz)
Eligible nationalities (current list): Australia, Brazil, India, Israel, Japan, Canada, South Korea, Mexico, New Zealand, Singapore, United Kingdom, United States, Taiwan. (mpo.gov.cz)
Who runs it?
- Lead authority: Ministry of Industry & Trade (MPO) — assesses admission to the program.
- After admission: You file the actual long-term visa/permit at a Czech embassy/consulate; the Ministry of the Interior handles residence issuance.
- Service standard: applications under the program are processed in up to 45 days. (mpo.gov.cz)
Legal basis
The program operates under Government Resolution No. 475 of 28 June 2023 (special government programs of economic benefit). (ipc.gov.cz)
How long can you stay?
You apply for either a long-term visa (stay over 90 days) or a long-term residence permit, then renew per standard immigration rules. Processing priority (45 days) applies once you’re admitted to the program. (mpo.gov.cz)
Key requirements (high level)
- Profile: IT/marketing professional, either (a) employee of a foreign employer working remotely from Czechia, or (b) freelancer holding/obtaining a Czech trade license in IT or marketing services.
- Docs: purpose of stay, proof of accommodation, proof of funds, criminal record extract, valid health insurance, passport, biometrics, etc. (standard Czech long-term visa/permit bundle).
- Important restriction: You cannot have held a Czech long-term visa/permit in the preceding year when you apply for admission to the program. (mpo.gov.cz)
Note: Official guidance does not publish a single numeric income threshold on the MPO page; consulates may verify financial means against standard long-term-stay rules. Always follow the checklist in the MPO “Step-by-Step” guides linked below. (mpo.gov.cz)
Step-by-step (practical)
- Apply for program admission (MPO): Email the Application Form and required attachments to digitalnomad@mpo.gov.cz. Use the dedicated Step-by-Step guide for your track (employee vs. freelancer). (mpo.gov.cz)
- Wait for MPO decision: If admitted, you’ll receive confirmation to use the fast-track channel. (mpo.gov.cz)
- File at a Czech mission: Submit your long-term visa or residence application (and dependents’) at a Czech embassy/consulate—some provide extra local notes (example: Chicago). (Czech Foreign Affairs)
- Processing & entry: Target ≤45 days for the visa/permit decision under the program; then travel, register residence, and complete local steps per the Ministry of the Interior guidance. (mpo.gov.cz)
